New Organization, Same Lies about Planned Parenthood
There’s a new group out there, called Live Action, who’s sole purpose for being is to take down one of the finest american institutions, Planned Parenthood.
There is a meme heading round the right wing press that Planned Parenthood is only interested in abortions, and do not offer much else. One very important service they do offer is mammograms, and other women’s health services. Live action claimed to have called up 30 planned parenthood clinics and asked if they offer mammograms, all apparently said no.
I decided to check with Planned Parenthood, and searched for the ones near to Live Action’s office in San Jose.
View Planned Parenthood near Life Action in a larger map
In this map view,
- Blossom Hill (a) does offer Mammograms, and Abortions
- Mar Monte (b) does offer Mammograms and does not offer Abortions
- Eastside (c) does offer Mammograms and Abortions
- San Jose (d) does offer Mammograms and Abortions
So even in the same town as Live Action all within a local phone call all offer mammograms and not all offer abortions.
For a wider view, of the 20 planned parenthoods within 55 miles of Live Action’s offices, 4 do not do abortions. ALL do mammograms and other women’s health services. They also provide these vital services to the communities they are in.
- Birth Control Services
- Emergency Contraception
- HIV Testing
- HPV & Hepatitis Vaccines
- LGBT Services
- Men’s Health Services
- Patient Education
- Pregnancy Testing, Options & Services
- STD Testing & Treatment
7 of the clinics also operate as general health clinics.
This dishonest and fabricated attack on Planned Parenthood is nothing but a disgusting attack on Planned Parenthood, which I am proud to support, politically, ethically, and financially. This is an attack on poor and disadvantaged people and those brave and noble people who support them.
Live Action’s entire purpose is just to spread lies about Planned Parenthood.

i’ve been to many PPs [my mom is an OB/Gyn Nurse Practiconer, and she volunteered at one; when i was old enough, i joined her until i moved to Ohio. they don't use volunteers here, and there's, i believe, only ONE left open in Columbus]
i have NEVER been at a PP that did abortions. the abortion i had was done at a private clinic that did nothing but abortions, an it accepted ZERO charity [although it did hook women in need up with programs that might help them]. also, they require you to pay up front [which was almost impossible in my case - i was transfered from an ER, as i was dying, and the ******* Catholic hospital that i was in refused to allow an abortion to happen until they'd convened a "panel" - which would have taken, at BEST, 48 hours. i barely lasted the 10 hours until the clinic opened, and i remember almost none of it. the ER doctor paid for it, and i paid him back]
i *HAVE* used PP for many other things – birth control, of course, but from age 19 [when i got divorced and no longer got to use military health care, which i'd used my entire life] until i went back to college at Ohio State [which has a student clinic] at age 29, i used PP – and still did, sometimes, while in school, as BC thru PP was cheaper than BC thru the school, somehow. at least, NeuvaRing was – my Implanon i got at the school
but i also got my yearly pap; pregnancy test once [when i wasn't pregnant, just paranoid. sigh] STD tests *often* [every 6 months, until i "settled down" with my current partner], counseling, some genetic testing…
when i had custody of my youngest sister, age 16-18, i took her to PP. she got Depo [and a eff-ton of condoms, and spermicide...]. she got the HPS vaccine thru PP. [and i'm bitter, because *I* can't get it, i'm too old - even though the "reason" people over 28 aren't "approved" is because it's much more likely they will test positive for HPV, i DON'T. so i should be able to get it. more sigh]
my other sister’s husband works for a Catholic hospital [a different branch of the hospital that would have let me die...]. both she and my 15-year-old niece go to PP, my sister because she has PCOS and several other “female problems” that are best treated with hormonal BC that their insurance won’t pay because it’s thru said Catholic hospital; my niece has gone twice, since she started menstrating, just paps [and i'm REALLY annoyed that my sister won't even consider letting her get BC if she wants - both this sister and i started having sex at 15, and our parents would NOT have known, if we hadn't told them. i'm pretty sure niece isn't having sex YET, but... but. i worry]
PP wrote me an Rx for the morning after pill after every pelvic/pap. i had to use it once [yay broken condom]. i’d use it again, in a heartbeat.
but now i’m disabled, FINALLY just got approved for SSI/SSDI last week, and have medicaid. right now, i don’t need PP – which is GOOD, because they’ve gone from SIX clinics in the “Greater Columbus Metro Area” that barely covered the need, to *ONE* where you schedule on the 1st day of the month and PRAY there’s still an appointment, ANY appointment, left, by the time your call gets thru.
but lets go ahead a defund the organization that does the MOST actual medical care of female patients – they don’t need those “frivilious” pap smears or mammograms or cancer treatments or STD testing/treatment, let ALONE birth control!
seriously, to my knowledge, NONE of the PPs in Ohio do abortions – NONE! yet this “defund” party is supposedly aimed at “lowering the abortion rate”.
all it’s going to do is RAISE it – and raise the rate of “illegal” abortions, and maternal deaths from them, and suicides.

They offer “REFERRALS” that is different then preforming an actual mammogram as there CEO implied.
Referrals and funding…many centers cannot afford the mammogram machines, so they either have one at a larger center such as the Texas one or local hospitals they send women to and fund the tests.
